Hier am Weißen See müssen wir entscheiden, wie wir weitermachen wollen. Während wir auf Helga und Horst warten, die noch heute im Laufe des Tages nach Tariat kommen wollen, beratschlagen wir uns.

Eigentlich möchten wir beide noch zum Chöwsgöl Nuur Nationalpark, ganz im Norden der Mongolei, an der Grenze zu Russland. Der See und der Nationalpark gelten als lohnendes Reiseziel.

Die einzige Teerstraße dorthin führt erst weit nach Osten, Richtung Ulan Bator, und dann wieder nach Nordwesten bis Mörön und Khatgal. Das sind gut 700 km und einen großen Teil der Strecke müssten wir dann wieder zurück Richtung Ulan Bator fahren. Das sieht nicht sehr verlockend aus.

Sehr viel interessanter wäre es, direkt nach Norden Richtung Mörön zu fahren. Die Strecke wäre viel kürzer, aber es gibt in dieser Richtung nur Pisten, und wir haben keine Ahnung, in welchem Zustand die sind. Außerdem sind die Angaben über die möglichen Routen nicht eindeutig und wir haben schon einmal eine gefährlich Irrfahrt (Link) hinter uns gebracht. Das wollen wir auf alle Fälle vermeiden, zumal wir jetzt ganz auf uns alleine gestellt sind und leider kein Mog mehr dabei ist, der uns eventuell helfen könnte.

Also entscheiden wir uns, an diesem Punkt der Reise allmählich umzukehren und ab morgen auf der Hauptstrecke bis Ulan Bator zurückzufahren. Auch auf dieser Strecke gibt es noch einiges zu sehen.

Una decisión difícil

Aquí en el Lago Blanco tenemos que decidir cómo queremos continuar. Mientras esperamos a Helga y Horst, que quieren llegar a Tariat durante el día, lo discutimos entre nosotros.

En realidad, nos gustaría mucho ir al Parque Nacional Chöwsgöl Nuur, en el extremo norte de Mongolia, en la frontera con Rusia. El lago y el parque nacional son considerados un destino que vale la pena de verdad.

El único camino asfaltado conduce primero hacia el este, en dirección a Ulan Bator, y luego otra vez hacia el noroeste a Mörön y Khatgal. Son unos 700 km buenos y además tuviéramos de volver una gran parte del camino en el regreso a Ulan Bator. Eso no parece muy tentador.

Sería mucho más interesante conducir directamente al norte hacia Mörön. La distancia sería mucho más corta, pero solo hay pistas en esa dirección, y no tenemos idea de en qué condición se encuentran. Además, la información sobre las posibles rutas no es muy exacta y ya hemos tenido una experiencia especial, cuando nos perdimos en el norte del desierto Gobi (Link). Queremos evitarlo a toda costa, especialmente ahora que estamos completamente solos y, lamentablemente, no hay un Mog que pueda ayudarnos.

Entonces, en este punto del viaje, decidimos regresar a Ulan Bator en la línea principal a partir de mañana. También en esta ruta todavía hay mucho que ver.

A difficult decision

Here at the White Lake we have to decide how we want to continue. While we wait for Helga and Horst, who still want to come to Tariat during the day, we discuss our options.

Actually, we both still want to visit Chöwsgöl Nuur National Park, in the very north of Mongolia, on the border with Russia. The lake and the national park are considered a worthwhile destination.

The only tarred road there leads first far to the east, direction Ulan Bator, and then again to the northwest to Mörön and Khatgal. That’s a good 700 km and a big part of the way we would have to go back to Ulan Bator. That does not look very tempting.

It would be much more interesting to drive directly north towards Mörön. The distance would be much shorter, but there are only tracks in that direction, and we have no idea what condition they are in. In addition, the information on the possible routes are not very clear and we already have a dangerous odyssey (link) behind us. We want to avoid that at all costs, especially now that we are completely on our own and unfortunately no Mog is there that could possibly help us.

So, at this point of the journey, we decide to start our return to Ulan Bator on the main road as of tomorrow. Also on this route there is still a lot to see.
