Seit ein paar Tagen versuche ich immer mal wieder den Weg von Palenque nach Tikal im Navi zu finden. Aber das Tom Tom sagt jedes Mal, dass es das Ziel nicht finden kann. Ich versuche es mit verschiedenen anderen Orten in Guatemala, aber immer dieselbe Antwort.

Irgend etwas stimmt nicht. Per Mail versuche ich Rat bei Tom Tom zu bekommen. Ergebnis: Vorgefertigte Antworten, die mir nicht weiterhelfen. Also entschließe ich mich, die Software abzudaten. Bei den hiesigen Downloadzeiten ein endloses Unterfangen.

Ergebnis: Bei ca. 40 Prozent bricht die Installation der Software auf meinem Gerät regelmäßig ab. Ich überlege: Da der Speicherplatz auf dem Tom Tom knapp ist, lösche ich alle Karten. Vielleicht liegt es ja an der Enge auf der SD-Karte (oder gar an der Enge und der Hitze in unserer Esperanza). Wer weiß?

Das viele elektronische Hin und Her führt leider nur dazu, dass plötzlich auch noch mein Apple seinen Dienst aufgibt. Beim Neustart bleibt der Bildschirm grau und es erscheint ein Ordner mit großem Fragezeichen:

Eine schöne Bescherung.

Über Clemens Computer suche ich Rat im Internet, aber alle Versuche, meinen Apple wieder zum Laufen zu bringen, schlagen fehl. Wir stellen uns darauf ein, ab sofort ohne Navigationsgerät und ohne meinen Computer weiterzufahren.

Erst später wird mir bewusst, dass damit auch zahlreiche Videos der letzten Wochen, meine E-Mail-Adressen und viele mehr – zumindest vorläufig – im virtuellen Nirvana verschwunden sind: Was für eine Bescherung!

Que tal regalo!

Desde hace días tratamos de encontrar el camino de Palenque a Tikal en nuestro sistema de navegación. Pero el Tom Tom dice cada vez que no puede encontrar estos lugares. Trato con diferentes lugares en Guatemala, pero recibo siempre la misma respuesta.

Algo no está bien. Busco orientación por email con Tom Tom. Resultado: respuestas automáticas, que no ayudan. Entonces decido de actualizar el software. Con los tiempos de internet existentes … una acción sin final.

Resultado: cuando se acerca al 40 % se cae toda la instalación. Pienso: como la memoria en el Tom Tom está casí llena, decido borrar todas los mapas. A lo mejor radica el problema en la memoria limitada de la tarjeta (o a la estrechez y calor dentro de nuestra Esperanza). Quién sabe?

Este ir y venir electrónico hace que de pronto mi computadora Apple tampoco funciona. Cuando inicio una sesión aparece una pantalla gris con una carpeta con un signo de pregunta en el medio. Un gran regalo.

A través de la computadora de Clemen busco orientación en el internet. Todos mis intentos de restaurar mi Apple no funcionan. Decidimos como en viejos tiempos continuar el viaje sin sistema de navegación y sin computadora.

Recién más tarde caigo en cuenta con este impase se han perdido muchos vídeos de las últimas semanas, mis emails y muchas cosas más se encuentran en el Nirvana digital – al menos por el momento :

What a mess

For a couple of days I have been trying again and again, to program the route from Palenque to Tikal on my GPS. But the Tom Tom always tells me, that it can’t find the destination. I try it with different destinations in Guatemala, but I always get the same answer.

Something must be wrong. By email I try to get help from the Tom Tom customer service, but I only receive pre-formulated answers, which don’t help. Therefore I decide to update the software. Given the download speeds in this area it is an endless undertaking.

Result: After installing about 40% of the data on my GPS, the installation is interrupted several times. I try to figure out possible reasons: Since there is little space left on the SD-card I delete all maps. Maybe the problems are due too the small space on the card (or in our Esperanza and the high temperatures.) Who knows?

Using Clemen’s computer I look for help on the internet, but whatever I try, my Aplle is not willing to start again. We try to accept the idea, that we will have to continue our trip without GPS and without my computer.

Only after a while I realize, that – at least for the moment – a lot of videos, which I made during the last weeks and all my contacts have disappeared in the virtual Nirvana:
